The big picture: AI coding tools split roughly into three tiers of autonomy: in-editor autocomplete (GitHub Copilot) that suggests the next few lines as you type, AI-native editors (Cursor, Windsurf) built around chat-driven code generation across a whole project, and fully agentic tools (Claude Code) that can independently plan, write, test, and execute multi-step coding tasks with minimal supervision. The right tier depends on the job — quick suggestions versus a genuine autonomous collaborator are very different tools even though all three get called "AI coding assistants."
