True Crime: the business behind the genre

One of the most consistently engaged content categories that exists — and increasingly, one of the most closely tracked by advertisers.

Investment angle: True crime makes up as much as 20% of total podcast listening time in the US (Edison Research), with over 23,000 true crime podcasts now live as of 2026 — genuine saturation, but also genuine demand. Real capital is flowing to the category: Ashley Flowers' Audiochuck, the company behind Crime Junkie (Apple Podcasts' former #1 true crime podcast), received a $40 million minority investment from Peter Chernin's The Chernin Group to fund its next phase of growth. SiriusXM's "Morbid" saw its ad revenue grow 68% in Q1 2026 compared to Q4 2025. On the streaming side, Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max have all invested heavily in premium true crime productions, while Investigation Discovery has pivoted to a "docbuster" strategy — fewer, bigger, appointment-viewing docuseries instead of high-volume content. Ad buyers now treat the genre with real sophistication too: True Crime has the second-highest ad spend of any podcast genre and ranks in the top 20% for advertising efficiency, though performance varies significantly by sub-format (companion shows, investigative, broadcast IP adaptations).

True crime "isn't a monolith" — sub-format matters more than the genre label

Advertising intelligence firm Oxford Road's ORBIT tool found that companion shows, investigative formats, broadcast-IP adaptations, and "dark crossover" shows each perform very differently for advertisers — testing one true crime format and calling it representative of the whole genre is a real measurement mistake.

Video and short-form clips are reshaping how the genre gets discovered

True crime video clips see roughly 3x more social media shares than audio-only episodes, with sub-30-second clips getting 2.5x higher engagement on TikTok — Apple Podcasts is adding integrated video features in 2026, following Spotify and YouTube's lead.
