Investment angle: The global airline industry is projected to carry 5.2 billion passengers in 2026 — a new all-time record, surpassing the 4.5 billion pre-pandemic peak — generating $1.05 trillion in total revenue. But the profit picture tells the real story: net industry profit is projected at roughly $41 billion, a record in dollar terms, yet that's still just a 3.9% margin, meaning airlines earn only about $7.90 per passenger. Middle Eastern carriers (Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways) are the structural outlier, earning nearly 3x the profit-per-passenger of North American carriers on premium long-haul routes through the Dubai/Doha hub model. Ancillary revenue — baggage fees, seat selection, loyalty program payments from co-branded credit cards — has grown to roughly $145 billion, nearly 14% of total industry revenue, up from 12-13% pre-pandemic. This is why airlines increasingly behave like loyalty-program companies that happen to fly planes: the mileage business is high-margin and largely insulated from fuel-price swings that squeeze the actual flying business.
