Investment angle: The global airline industry is projected to carry 5.2 billion passengers in 2026 — a new all-time record, surpassing the 4.5 billion pre-pandemic peak — generating $1.05 trillion in total revenue. But the profit picture tells the real story: net industry profit is projected at roughly $41 billion, a record in dollar terms, yet that's still just a 3.9% margin, meaning airlines earn only about $7.90 per passenger. Middle Eastern carriers (Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways) are the structural outlier, earning nearly 3x the profit-per-passenger of North American carriers on premium long-haul routes through the Dubai/Doha hub model. Ancillary revenue — baggage fees, seat selection, loyalty program payments from co-branded credit cards — has grown to roughly $145 billion, nearly 14% of total industry revenue, up from 12-13% pre-pandemic. This is why airlines increasingly behave like loyalty-program companies that happen to fly planes: the mileage business is high-margin and largely insulated from fuel-price swings that squeeze the actual flying business.

United posts a record quarter, but fuel bites margins

United carried 49.5 million passengers in Q3 (a record); revenue rose 17.4% to $17.9 billion while fuel expense rose 62% and adjusted net income fell to $833 million from $909 million. Financial signal: demand is there, costs are the constraint. Not investment advice.

Travel revenue is rising on price, not volume

Skift Research says its travel health index held at 100 in August versus a year earlier, jet fuel ran about 52% above 2025, and the 2026 US RevPAR forecast was raised to 4.4% on room rates rather than occupancy. Growth increasingly depends on a smaller group of affluent travelers. Financial signal: pricing power, not traffic, is carrying revenue.

US hotels: forecasters raise 2026 outlook on record first-half room nights

CoStar and Tourism Economics now expect 2026 US RevPAR to grow 4.4% (up from 2.8%) and room rates to grow 3.1%, with occupancy at 63.1%. They expect smaller second-half gains driven mainly by price. Financial signal: RevPAR +4.4% forecast, up from +2.8% (Aug 7, 2026). Not investment advice.

Booking: Google AI Mode adds in-chat hotel booking with ten partners

Airlines: card partners pay Delta $8.2 billion a year
