Layoff runway calculator: how many months will your money last?

Enter your savings, severance, bills and any income or benefits. See your run-out date and how much cutting spending buys you. Updated October 23, 2026.

Short answer: your runway is savings plus severance divided by what you spend each month beyond what comes in. Most people only count savings and forget health insurance and the weeks before benefits start. This tool counts both. Nothing you type leaves your device.

Savings you can use (cash, checking, savings), $ Severance after tax, $ (0 if none) Monthly must-pay bills (housing, food, utilities, transport, minimum debt payments), $ Extra monthly health insurance cost you will now pay, $ (0 if none) Other monthly income while you search (partner, side work), after tax, $ Monthly unemployment benefit after tax, $ (0 if not eligible or unknown) Weeks until the first benefit payment arrives Months benefits will last Spending cut you could make, % of must-pay bills (0 to 50) Show my runway

What to do in the first 7 days

  1. File for unemployment benefits right away. Waiting can cost you weeks of payments. Each state sets its own amount and length, so find your state agency through CareerOneStop, a U.S. Department of Labor site.
  2. Check your health coverage deadline. Under COBRA you generally have 60 days to elect coverage, and losing job-based coverage usually opens a 60-day window to enroll in a plan at HealthCare.gov. Compare the two before choosing, since the cost difference can be large. Confirm dates with your plan administrator.
  3. Read your severance paperwork before signing. Note what it says about benefits, vacation payout and any release of claims. If the amount is large, consider a one-hour consult with an employment lawyer.
  4. Call lenders before you miss a payment. Many offer a short hardship plan if you ask early.
  5. Pause nonessential recurring charges today. Use the cut percentage above to see what that is worth.
