Fashion & Beauty: Shein's $27B reality check
A down-round IPO, a beauty conglomerate on an acquisition tear, and a resale market growing twice as fast as new apparel — the money behind the runway right now.
Investment angle: The single biggest story in fashion business this year is Shein's Hong Kong Stock Exchange debut on September 1, 2026 — a $27 billion valuation that raised roughly $1.8 billion but landed 73% below the company's $100 billion private valuation from 2022, with shares trading below the offer price on day one. That's still enough to top H&M's market capitalization, but the discount tells the real story: Q1 2026 revenue grew just 1.1% year-over-year (versus adding roughly $9 billion in 2024 revenue alone), operating profit fell 26% in the same quarter, and new US low-value-package tariffs plus intensifying competition from Temu, Amazon, and a digitally-retooled Inditex are compressing the ultra-fast-fashion model that built Shein in the first place. Meanwhile beauty is consolidating from the top down — Estée Lauder is moving to acquire the remaining shares of Forest Essentials, India's top prestige skincare brand, after an 18-year partnership, positioning India as ELC's largest emerging market — and resale is the one corner of apparel growing faster than the industry around it: ThredUp's 2026 Resale Report puts the global secondhand market on pace for $393 billion by 2030, expanding roughly 9% annually and about twice as fast as new-apparel sales, with supply (not demand) now the binding constraint.
Shein's IPO priced a structural slowdown, not just a bad news cycle
The 73% haircut from Shein's 2022 peak isn't sentiment — it's arithmetic. Revenue growth cratered from roughly $9 billion added in 2024 to about $3 billion in 2025, and Q1 2026 operating profit dropped 26% to $258 million as marketing and fulfillment costs rose while sales barely moved. The company also shifted its listing plans from New York to London to Hong Kong as regulatory friction mounted in each jurisdiction — a telling sign of how politically loaded ultra-fast-fashion supply chains have become.

Even a "disappointing" IPO still values Shein above H&M
Despite trading below its offer price, Shein's $26.5-27 billion valuation still tops H&M's market cap — a reminder of just how large Shein's peak private valuation was, and how much room it had to fall while still landing above a century-old public retailer. H&M itself is running a different playbook: softer sales, but improving profitability through tighter inventory management rather than growth at any cost.

Estée Lauder is buying its way back to growth, one heritage brand at a time
ELC agreed to acquire the remaining shares of Forest Essentials — India's top prestige skincare brand — building on an 18-year relationship that started with a minority stake in 2008. Founder Mira Kulkarni and her son Samrath Bedi stay on to run it, R&D and manufacturing stay in New Delhi, and the deal (expected to close in H2 2026) makes India Estée Lauder's largest emerging market. It's the clearest signal yet that Big Beauty's growth strategy has shifted from launching new brands to buying proven regional winners outright.

Resale is the one apparel category structurally outgrowing the industry
ThredUp's 14th annual Resale Report found the global secondhand apparel market grew 13% in 2025 while new apparel sales were nearly flat, and US resale is now expanding roughly four times faster than traditional retail. The report projects a $393 billion global secondhand market by 2030 (about 9% CAGR), driven by "resale-native" younger shoppers entering the market with real purchasing power, AI tools reducing the friction of buying and selling used goods, and — notably — supply of secondhand inventory, not demand, as the actual growth bottleneck.

September's fashion weeks are running against this backdrop
New York, London, and Milan Fashion Week's September 2026 calendars are underway with the CFDA's preliminary NYFW schedule and Milan's official lineup both live — but the business context behind the shows this season is unusually loaded, from Shein's public-market debut to the resale boom eating into full-price sell-through and pressuring brands to rethink how much inventory they actually need to produce.
