Entertainment: movies, TV & music

Live headlines from Variety, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and Billboard — organized by media type.

Investment angle: Disney and Netflix are trading places on the growth-versus-value spectrum in 2026. Disney's streaming segment posted an 88% year-over-year operating income jump and hit an 11% margin for the first time in Q2, even as its stock sits down about 15% on the year and trades at roughly 13 times forward earnings — a discount to Netflix's 20x multiple. Netflix, meanwhile, gave investors a jolt when its Q3 guidance called for slowing revenue growth, even as its ad-supported tier keeps expanding. Wall Street's split: growth investors still lean Netflix, value investors are increasingly eyeing Disney as the contrarian streaming buy. Beyond the two giants, analysts are also watching Spotify, Live Nation, and Warner Music as the music side of entertainment attracts its own investment case.

Paramount's $111B Warner Bros. Discovery deal hits turbulence as state AG coalition splinters

Paramount Skydance is in settlement talks with the 12-state coalition of attorneys general suing to block its $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, but the coalition is fractured over terms as of September 20. California AG Rob Bonta is said to be open to a conditioned settlement, while New York AG Letitia James and others are pushing stricter terms, including that Paramount operate WBD's studio separately for a time and release at least 30 films theatrically per year. A federal judge ordered a two-day settlement conference October 14-15 in San Francisco; absent a deal, trial starts March 2027. Paramount owes a $0.25/share quarterly "ticking fee" to WBD shareholders for every quarter the deal stays unclosed past September 30, 2026.

Sony's "Resident Evil" reboot scores franchise-best $60M opening

Sony Pictures and Constantin Film's Zach Cregger-directed Resident Evil reboot opened to $60 million domestically over September 18-20 — the best domestic opening in the 25-year-old franchise's history. International box office added $48.3 million for a $108.3 million global start on a reported $75 million budget, with a 96% certified-fresh Rotten Tomatoes score. It's the second-biggest domestic September opening on record, trailing only Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle's $70.6 million from the prior year.

James Cameron's Lightstorm Vision buys AI-driven 3D studio Outsyders

On September 16, James Cameron's Lightstorm Vision acquired Outsyders, an AI-driven 3D conversion and production studio, in a deal with undisclosed terms. Outsyders has done AI-powered 3D work on Disney's Lilo & Stitch, Tron: Ares, Moana, and IMAX's Blue Angels. The companies describe the combination as "the industry's first end-to-end solution" for 3D content production, pairing Outsyders' AI conversion pipeline with Lightstorm's native-capture technology — a vertical-integration bet analysts flag as a defining feature of 2026 media M&A.

Investment angle: Meta, Alphabet (YouTube), and Snap remain the three publicly investable pure-play social platforms — TikTok (ByteDance) and X are both privately held, so there's no direct stock exposure to either. Meta's ad business continues carrying the company through heavy AI infrastructure capex, YouTube has become one of Alphabet's fastest-growing segments as it displaces traditional TV viewing, and Snap remains the smallest and most volatile of the three, still working toward consistent profitability.

What the research actually shows — not alarmist, not dismissive: The US Surgeon General's 2023 Advisory found teens using social media more than 3 hours daily face roughly double the risk of mental health problems, and 46% of teens 13-17 report social media makes them feel worse about their body image (versus just 14% who feel better). But researchers are careful to note these are correlational studies — proving social media causes these outcomes, versus people already struggling gravitating toward heavier use, remains genuinely difficult to establish. It's also not one-sided: the same research base finds real benefit in community-building and peer support for some users. One honest, counterintuitive finding: studies on warning labels (similar to tobacco warnings) show mixed-to-negative results — some research suggests labels may actually increase the body-comparison behaviors they're meant to reduce.

What to know: Netflix has become the dominant home for stand-up specials, effectively supplanting HBO's role from the 1980s-2000s — Google Trends data shows "stand up comedy Netflix" searches peaked at 100 (max index) in January 2026, with "comedy specials 2026" emerging from zero to 63, real evidence of surging demand for fresh recommendations. Netflix Is a Joke Fest has become the industry's marquee live event, drawing everyone from rising talent to legends like Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, and Jerry Seinfeld for one week each spring.

Investment angle: The global creator economy — the industry that now produces most celebrity and pop-culture coverage — is estimated to exceed $250 billion in 2026, with analysts projecting it could reach $500 billion by 2030. YouTube alone has paid creators more than $70 billion cumulatively, and the global influencer marketing industry is expected to reach $34 billion in 2026, with brands now allocating up to 25% of digital marketing budgets to influencer and creator campaigns.

The Future of Content — AI & the Move Away From Hollywood

AI-generated films by individual creators are now outgrossing studio releases

Curry Barker's AI-assisted "Obsession" has grossed more than $370 million globally, Kane Parsons' "Backrooms" pulled in roughly $330 million and became A24's highest-grossing film ever, and Markiplier's "Iron Lung" has taken in more than $51 million — all built around individual creators and AI-assisted production rather than traditional studio infrastructure.

Talent is drifting from studio-controlled fame toward direct-to-fan content

Voices like Bryan Smiley (Hard Carry Media), Joe Ochoa (Creator TV), and Chris Williams (pocket.watch) point to the same pattern from VidCon 2026: stars increasingly build direct relationships with fans through their own channels. Netflix's creator partnerships and Amazon's Fire TV Creator Hub are both platform-level bets that this personal, creator-first model of fame is now mainstream.

License Your Likeness — What Actors Need to Know About AI Rights

The short version: SAG-AFTRA's 2026 TV/Theatrical Agreement (ratified 91.42%, effective through June 30, 2030) requires specific written consent for each individual AI "digital replica" use of a performer, plus minimum compensation separate from the base performance fee — turning a performer's AI likeness into a real, ongoing revenue stream rather than a free-to-reuse liability.
