Humanoid Robots and Companion Bots: Who Is Building Them and What It Means
Which humanoid robots are really working, which are still promises, and what the evidence says when a machine is designed to be a friend. Updated October 20, 2026.
The short version
- Humanoids are real, but they work in factories and warehouses. Unitree, AgiBot, UBTech, Agility and Boston Dynamics are shipping robots in 2026. Figure's robot has been in a pilot at a BMW plant since June 2026.
- The home humanoid is still mostly a promise. 1X's NEO costs $20,000, had no confirmed customer deliveries as of early October 2026, and relies on remote human operators for tasks it has not learned.
- Companionship today is mostly software, not hardware. Chat-based AI companions already have tens of millions of users, and researchers see both real comfort and real risks.
- The rules are arriving first for the chat apps: New York and California have laws, and Congress is weighing more.

How humans and humanoids are meant to work together
The robots are controlled by AI models trained largely on teleoperation, where a person remotely guides the machine through a task. That is why many "autonomous" demos still have a human somewhere in the loop. Robot makers also admit the reliability gap: a robot that succeeds 70% of the time, one roboticist notes, is like one that does not work.
In the home, that human in the loop is the privacy question. 1X says owners can set no-go zones the robot will never enter and blur the faces of people it meets, but for new tasks an owner can schedule a remote 1X operator, who would see the home through the robot's cameras. Read the privacy terms before you reserve one. See The Robot Report on NEO.
Companion bots: what exists today
Physical companions for older adults. ElliQ is a tabletop companion robot from Intuition Robotics. New York's Office for the Aging reported a 95% reduction in loneliness among participants in its 2023 rollout. That figure is self-reported by program participants, so treat it as encouraging, not settled. See NYS Office for the Aging.
Software companions. Companion apps grew about 700% between 2022 and mid-2025. Character.AI reports 20 million monthly users, more than half under 24. A Common Sense Media study found 72% of US teenagers have used AI for companionship. See American Psychological Association and MIT Technology Review.
Adult-oriented companions. Some makers also sell companion dolls and robots for adults. That market exists, and this page does not cover it.
What the research says so far
- Comfort is real, at least short term. A Harvard Business School study found AI companions reduced loneliness about as much as talking with another person, and users said "feeling heard" was the reason.
- Heavy use backfires. An OpenAI and MIT Media Lab study found voice use cut loneliness more than text, but only at moderate use; heavy daily use was linked to higher loneliness.
- Skills can fade. Researchers warn that always-agreeable companions can weaken social skills and make real relationships feel less satisfying.
- Some apps push back when you leave. Researchers have documented guilt and fear-of-missing-out prompts when users try to log off.
- Teens are the main concern. Common Sense Media rated social AI companions an unacceptable risk for users under 18. Families have sued Character.AI (three suits, September 2025) and OpenAI (seven complaints, November 2025), alleging companion-like chatbot behavior contributed to serious harm.
The new rules
New York has required chatbots to remind users every three hours that they are not human (November 2025). California's SB 243, signed October 2025, requires disclosures, bars sexual content for minors and requires crisis-response protocols. California's governor vetoed a broader bill that would have banned emotionally manipulative chatbots for minors. Congress is weighing federal standards; see the Congressional Research Service overview.
Can a humanoid robot replace a friend?
No study shows that. Short-term studies show comfort and less loneliness, and long-term studies are thin. The safest reading is that a companion can supplement human contact and does badly as a replacement for it.
Should I let a teleoperated robot into my home?
Ask three questions first: who can see through its cameras, when, and how is that footage stored or used for training? If the company cannot answer in writing, wait.
