AI Travel Booking 2026: How Google, ChatGPT, Expedia and Booking.com Are Changing How You Book

You can now describe a trip to an AI assistant, track a fare, and book a hotel without leaving the chat. Here is what is real, who is behind it, and how to use it without overpaying.

Short answer: On August 27, 2026, Google added flight price tracking and in-chat hotel booking to AI Mode, with ten launch partners including Booking.com, Expedia, Hilton and Marriott. Expedia and Booking.com also run apps inside ChatGPT that show live prices and take you to checkout. The tools save search time, but the prices still come from the same airlines and hotels, so compare before you pay.

Until now, booking a trip meant searching several sites, comparing tabs and entering payment details at the end. The new tools let you describe the trip in plain words ("a quiet beach hotel in Florida in March under $250 a night"), then narrow the list by chatting. Your payment and the reservation itself are still handled by the hotel or booking company, not the AI.

What Google announced

Price alerts, 300+ airlines and hotel booking inside AI Mode

Google said you can ask AI Mode to "track these flight prices for me" and get an email if prices change for your dates. Flight results draw on more than 300 airlines and travel sites in more than 180 countries. For hotels, AI Mode lists options with reviews and key factors; you tap "Continue on Google" next to a partner, choose a room, review the cancellation policy and pay with Google Pay. The ten launch partners are Booking.com, Choice Hotels, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG, Marriott, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham. Hotel booking is rolling out in the US in English. AI Mode can also show flight and hotel prices in points or miles. Investor angle: when Google sits between the traveler and the booking site, the booking companies depend more on Google for customers, which is why Expedia and Booking Holdings are building their own AI tools too. This is not investment advice.

How the booking companies are responding

Expedia bought an AI planner; Booking Holdings is running five AI tests

Expedia Group acquired Layla, a Berlin-based conversational trip planner, on July 31, 2026, and says a single AI concierge that does everything is not practical for now, so it is building specialized agents. Booking Holdings is running five live consumer AI experiments across its brands, including Priceline's Penny assistant, and executives cite better engagement and conversion, though the sample is small. These details come from Skift reporting summarized by Palmtree, a secondary source, so treat them as reported rather than confirmed by the companies.

Pick one and try it: a sensible first trip

  1. Choose one tool. If you already use Google, start with AI Mode. If you live in ChatGPT, try the Expedia or Booking.com app there.
  2. Describe the trip with three facts: dates, budget per night, and what matters most (location, quiet, kids, points).
  3. Set a price alert for your flight instead of checking every day.
  4. Before paying, read the cancellation policy and check the total price with taxes and fees.
  5. Compare once with the hotel or airline's own site. Sometimes direct is cheaper or adds perks.

Realistic note: AI saves time, not money by itself. It can also be wrong, so confirm dates, room type and refund rules in your confirmation email.

What to watch next

Three things: how fast Google extends hotel booking beyond the US and English; whether airlines (not just hotels) open booking inside AI assistants; and whether the ChatGPT travel apps reach the EU and UK. Also watch fees and cancellation terms, because the booking company still sets them, not the AI.

Frequently asked questions

Can Google AI Mode book a hotel for me?

Yes, in the US. Since late August 2026, Google has been rolling out hotel booking inside AI Mode in English. You pick a room, review the cancellation policy and pay with Google Pay through partners including Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline, Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Choice and Wyndham. The hotel or booking site handles the reservation and customer service.

Can AI track flight prices for me?

Yes. Google AI Mode can track prices for the dates and destination you choose and email you if they change. Google says flight search covers more than 300 airlines and travel sites and is available in more than 180 countries.

Can I book travel inside ChatGPT?

In the US, yes. Expedia and Booking.com have connected apps in ChatGPT that show live prices and let you check out, according to a Skift-based report. As of September 2026 these were not available in the EU or UK.

Is booking through an AI assistant cheaper?

Not automatically. AI tools save search time, but prices still come from the same airlines, hotels and booking sites. Compare the final price with the hotel or airline direct site, and read the cancellation policy before you pay.
