AI safety warnings from Amodei and Altman trigger a one-day chip-stock selloff
On Saturday, September 13, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay arguing AI labs should slow development of their most powerful models given safety risks; OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk both publicly agreed. On Monday, September 14, Nvidia fell roughly 3.4% — its worst single day since early July — and the PHLX Semiconductor Index sank nearly 6%. Broadcom fell about 3%, Intel about 5%, Marvell about 7%, while cybersecurity stocks rallied as a partial hedge trade.
OpenAI in talks for $1.2T+ valuation round, effectively shelving a 2026 IPO
Bloomberg and the Financial Times reported OpenAI is in early talks with investors for a new funding round valuing the company above $1.2 trillion, sharply up from the $852 billion valuation set in its March 2026 round. Altman said September 12 that "given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public." A round at this size would put OpenAI's valuation ahead of Anthropic's ~$965 billion (as of its May 2026 raise).
China's D-Robotics raises $400M Series C for humanoid-robot chips, ~$770M total in under a year
D-Robotics, a Chinese chipmaker building the "Sunrise" family of chips for humanoid and industrial robots, announced September 17 a $400 million Series C led by Mirae Asset. The company says Sunrise chip shipments have surpassed 8 million units, revenue rose "several-fold" year-over-year in H1 2026, and its newest Sunrise S600 chip has been adopted by 20+ embodied-AI customers including Ubtech, Fourier, and Booster Robotics. This follows a $270 million Series B in April 2026 — roughly $770 million raised in under a year.
